Meals on Wheels of Greater
St. Louis is a not-for profit, all-volunteer program delivering
affordable, nutritious meals to the elderly, handicapped, and convalescent
in the St. Louis area. We serve those that are unable to shop for
and prepare their own meals.
Home meal service to the St. Louis area was started in 1972 by Church Women United, an ecumenical women’s group. The Church Women United Meals on Wheels program began with service to Kirkwood and Lemay. Meals on Wheels of Greater St. Louis became the successor to that program, was incorporated in 1993, and is now the umbrella organization for 13 individual area programs. Since inception 50 years ago, dedicated volunteers have delivered over 12 million nutritional noontime meals to our recipients!
Each area program’s food preparation is contracted
with local organization kitchens, i.e. hospitals, nursing homes,
and caterers. This ensures a meal planned and prepared by professionals.
Meals are supplied at cost to our recipients. Once prepared, the
meals are packed for delivery by volunteers. The meals are then
promptly delivered directly to the recipient’s residence by
volunteers using their own cars. Meals on Wheels of Greater St.
Louis is an all-volunteer program...there is no paid staff. If you
are interested in volunteering for this valuable community service,
see How To Volunteer.
Meals on Wheels of Greater St. Louis receives no
governmental funds or subsidies. It receives donations from church
groups, businesses, civic organizations, and individuals. Such donations
help certain recipients who are experiencing extreme financial hardship
and cannot afford to pay the entire cost of a meal. If you would
like to contribute, see Donations.
If you or someone that you know has interest in
receiving meals, please see Who Is Eligible.
